chat #10: ayesha @elle.qui.vit

ayesha runs one of the most beautiful jewelry companies i’ve ever seen, and every piece is absolutely stunning and full of intention. i love following her journey on social media, and you will too!

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

i am a 33 year old mixed race (of south asian, arab, persian, and european descent) jewelry designer. i was born in london, and lived in pakistan until i was 7, then my mom, sister and i moved to america. we lived all over the north east coast, before I moved to spain for a few years and eventually california. my husband and i have lived in la for almost 6 years, and are getting ready for a very exciting move back to nyc.

tell me a bit more about your brand/company.

born from the name ayesha (my name), meaning "she who lives," elle qui vit explores notions of the divine feminine through the ages. mystical and symbolic adornments tell the stories of womanhood, celebrating our history, art, culture, wisdom, beauty, spirituality and intuition.

made in los angeles with a deep sense of integrity, each piece of jewelry is created with recycled metals, ethically sourced natural stones and hand-fused glass gems. along with inspired collections, elle qui vit specializes in custom commissions for distinctive pieces of fine jewelry, including engagement rings and wedding bands.

what does social media mean to you?

i see social media as a tool of connection. it’s an incredible way to connect people, resources, ideas and so much more.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

i think social media is really a double-edged sword. as mentioned, it’s a great tool of connection, and also provides space for everyone to use their voice, from the individual to the group to the business or platform, it allows us to put ourselves out there and be seen in a very public way. on the other hand, due to this exposure, social media has also created an environment of “copy cating.” and, at times, it can perpetuate a false sense of authenticity, unhealthy comparisons, wasted time and anxiety.

i’d say overall, it’s all how you use it and how you allow it to use you.

what do you do that brings you joy?

so much! through the year we had, i have been more attuned to bringing joy into everything i do, rather than finding separate time for joy. i find so much joy in elle qui vit, from research, to creation, to storytelling, to connecting with customers and followers. outside of that, reading incessantly, watching films on the criterion channel, dreaming, gift giving, singing and dancing, cooking and baking, spending quality time with my husband, talking to friends and family, going on long walks, meditating, stargazing and watering my plants fill me with joy. oh, and also a really great bath.

what’s your outlet?

i’ve been doing a lot of really deep inner work over the past few years, including different forms of therapy, meditation, and self reflection, and found that the deeper in i go, the more i accept, and resolve and release, the more it becomes my outlet. i crave self growth and despite how difficult it can be, i find a lot of comfort, rest and freedom in it.

what’s your favorite instagram account to follow?

@heroinejournal, dori & roux have created the most magical platform, every single post speaks to me in a way that makes me think THIS is what social media is for.

chat #9: aimee @bushelapeck

aimee also runs another one of my favorite skincare and beauty brands- bushel & a peck. i loved reading through her thoughtful answers, and i’m so excited to feature her!

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

my name is aimee, i live in oregon, i am 30 years old, and own bushel & a peck organic skincare.

tell me a bit more about your brand/company.

bushel & a peck organic skincare is a small batch handcrafted skincare company that i started back in 2016. i formulate and handcraft each product myself from hydrating lip balms that actually work, to mess-free body balm lotions, makeup remover, toner, etc. every single product is multi-purpose and is less than 10 ingredients.

what does social media mean to you?

social media to me means connecting with people you would otherwise not be able to. it gives you an genuine chance to interact with customers who become like friends and also is an amazing free marketing tool to small businesses who cannot afford traditional marketing.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

i believe it’s a combination of the two. it can be an incredible thing that is used for so much good, education, awareness, and connection. however, it can also become a trap of comparison, negativity, and a place where people think it’s ok to bully or harass others because they can hide behind a screen. i truly believe that it’s all about who you follow, what type of content you produce, having good boundaries in place, and also having a community outside of social media. social media is an incredible asset and a tool but not life.

what’s the goal of your social media?

the goal of my social media is to promote my small handcrafted skincare business, to spread awareness about mental health issues, and to educate others on non-toxic skincare.

how has your career impacted your social media presence?

before I started my business in 2016, i honestly just posted photos of what i liked on instagram and barely checked facebook. i honestly wasn’t super into social media until i started thinking about my business. i have become the face of my brand and it’s what my customers and followers have come to know and connect with.

what do you do that brings you joy?

dancing, cooking, being with good friends, and singing truly bring me joy!

what’s your favorite instagram account to follow?

@heathermcmahan is my favorite! heather is a true gem and makes me giggle constantly.

chat #8: ericka @axiology_beauty

i’m so excited to share this chat with the founder of one of my favorite beauty brands! i love all of my axiology lipsticks, and i can’t recommend the brand and its products enough!

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

my name is ericka rodriguez and i’m the founder of axiology, a natural, vegan and sustainable makeup company. i live in oregon, eat a lot of tofu and save multiple spiders a day.

what does social media mean to you?

social media means so much to my business. we are a small, indie beauty brand so social media is crucial. when i launched axiology i had no money, so i had to find a way to share axiology with no budget. so thank goodness for instagram.

from the axiology website- “for all its progress, the beauty industry still has a ways to go. animal testing and palm oil are still a thing and knowing what’s “clean” versus “natural” is still pretty darn confusing. call us crazy but, we don’t think finding good makeup that doesn’t harm humans or the planet should be so complicated. that’s why we started axiology; to make the most ethical lipstick on the planet. it ain’t easy! but it’s totally worth the sweat because our community is growing - thanks to many of you - and little by little we’re making a difference.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

because i’m a business owner, i see it as a positive. we are able to share our good-for-the-planet cosmetics product and get more people excited about axiology. i love small businesses and ig is one of the few ways we can find out about all the cool, creative companies out there.

what’s the goal of your social media?

to spread the word about our brand, axiology. also to inspire people- vegans, business owners, environmentalists to name a few. :)

what’s taking up your headspace? (what are you thinking about?)

i’m constantly thinking about how to do more good in the world through our business. we don’t see ourselves as a beauty company that happens to do good for the planet. we truly see ourselves as a do-good-for-the-planet company that happens to make beauty products.

what do you do that brings you joy?

i love people so connecting with friends and family is #1. also a big nature lover so anything outside is joyful- whether soaking up the sunshine reading a book or spending hours mountain or road biking. lastly, i love good vegan food so cooking up something delicious makes me smile.

what’s your outlet?

exercising! i love running, biking, and lifting weights.

chat #7: annie @pomvida

hi everyone, and welcome back to the chats page! this chat is with annie, an incredibly inspirational and insightful person who i’ve been lucky enough to connect with through instagram. i absolutely loved reading about her journey and thoughts on social media, and i can’t wait for you to read her opinions as well!

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

my name is annie horcasitas and i am 39 years old. i was born in a tiny town in the mountains of maine, grew up mainly in a coastal town in massachusetts and currently reside in miami. i have three sons, ages 7, 10 and 13. i was originally in public education before starting my own business.

what does social media mean to you?

i am a communicator and an over-sharer so i love that aspect of social media, as well as the ability it offers to stay in touch and see how old friends are doing. as a business, social media has become a wonderful way to explore my creative side in creating content and i do love connecting with customers and brands. however, running a social media account for my own business has made it something i need to be a little more thoughtful and intentional about. in addition, it means i feel the need to post valuable and interesting content daily and that pressure can be a lot.

tell me a bit more about your brand/company.

pom vida is a curated clean personal care shop. the combination of having three babies and then having thyroid cancer at a young age (31) made me pay attention to the ingredients and quality level of everything we were putting in and on our bodies. when it came time to switch out all of our face, body and hair care products to safer versions i became completely overwhelmed with the options and data. i wanted it to be a simple process and it just wasn’t. so, i create a space where people can shop for the whole family and know for certain that each ingredient has been double checked and the products themselves are the best in that category. in order to ensure this, i research every ingredient in every product we offer and have a clear ‘NOPE’ list on the site explaining which ingredients we will never allow... and why. i also spent an entire year focusing entirely on trialing thousands of products in order to make our site truly curated. we only offer the products we LOVED in every way during trials and don’t simply carry full lines from any brand - only the products of theirs that all trialists loved the most. i am hoping to truly simplify the process of switching to cleaner products so that safer personal care is more accessible to everyone. clean skincare and beauty should not be an exclusive space; it should be approachable and inclusive.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

overall, i definitely see it as a positive despite some of the stress and challenges it can create as i mentioned above. i love the ability to connect that it creates and to share your business or personal life with others in a meaningful way.

why do you think this is?

i think i find social media to be a positive space because i tend to use it in a positive way. i noticed that i was using facebook in a way that began to feel negative and upsetting so i began focusing any social media time and energy on instagram where i feel both my business and personal accounts are used for connection and creativity and where i only follow people or businesses that bring joy or knowledge.

what’s the goal of your social media?

with a background in education, i definitely view the main goal of the pom vida ig page as educational. i love sharing tips and data about products or ingredients with customers in a positive way that informs them without scaring or overwhelming them. also, of course, my hope is that the more people see and follow our ig, the more orders will come in so that our business can grow.

what’s taking up your headspace? (what are you thinking about?)

my children’s well-being (especially during covid) and how to grow pom vida take up about 97% of my headspace.

what do you do that brings you joy?

eat chocolate, fulfill pom vida orders, walk near the ocean, and most importantly, listen to my kids laugh with each other.

chat #6: melissa @lostseasonsupply

chat #6 features melissa, the owner of an absolutely amazing store, lost season supply, in oregon. i absolutely love all following along on her shop’s journey on social media, and i know you will too! keep reading to get her take on social media.

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

i’m melissa atillo, a WOC shop owner and fashion enthusiast in bend, OR.

what does social media mean to you?

social media is a good platform where i share products from my shop.

tell me a bit more about your brand/company.

i own a lifestyle boutique, lost season supply in bend, OR. my shop is body positive & inclusive. our clothing is casual, stylish outdoors with the occasional party and day dress vibe. i also love carrying artisanal jewelry and lots of magical gifts from varying makers.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

it can be positive in balanced doses.

why do you think this is?

[it can be] positive for businesses like mine to reach our targeted audience, get inspiration or to catch up on your loved ones’ events. but social media can be negative if you use it to take away time from being productive. it can be mentally draining.

how has your career impacted your social media presence?

my career and social media go hand in hand. it’s a place where i showcase our goods as well as curate lifestyle shoots around my product offerings.

what’s taking up your headspace? (what are you thinking about?)

i’m thinking about what I’m gonna make for dinner. :) always food on the brain!

what do you do that brings you joy?

virtual updates on my nephews, singing, and downtime with my husband, charlie.

what’s your outlet?

vegan baking, playing in my band, the color study and sleeping in!

what’s your favorite instagram account to follow?

don’t really have one, but i occasionally drool over @littleowlcabin for some PNW cabin porn. we recently stayed in one of their a frames.

chat #5: ruby @r.dhalwriter

welcome to chat #5! this chat features ruby dhal, an author and creator that i’ve been following online for years. her work is amazing, and you’ll often see it reposted on my feed. click here to buy her latest book- i can’t wait to read it!

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

my name is ruby dhal, i’m an author, speaker and content creator. i’m 26 years old (yikes!) and i live in london.

what does social media mean to you?

it’s a way of connecting with people from all over the world and being able to spread a positive message sooner, and further, than you would be able to prior to its invention.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

i think there’s a balance of both positive and negative.

why do you think this is?

the reason being is because there’s so many more opportunities and ways to connect with people from all over the world which we didn’t have before. this allows positive connection and the ability to form friendships and reach more people when you’re carrying out charity work, or social campaigns or trying to make a difference in the world somehow. social media allows us to get the message across the world faster.

but there’s also comparison, bullying and trolls which come with the territory. everyone seems to be living some sort of ‘perfect’ life online and you can’t help but compare yourself to that girl with the super-thin body or that boy with the gorgeous eyes and that particular relationship which looks picture-perfect. when you have an argument with your family then log on and find happy families posting photos together and it instantly makes you feel low.

so, there are positive aspects to social media - the ability to connect, reach out to larger groups of people quickly and create movements that are able to have a bigger impact on people everywhere. but there are negative aspects such as - comparison, trolling, online hate and so on.

what’s the goal of your social media?

to impact as many people as possible through engaging and life-changing content.

what do you do that brings you joy?

i go to the gym, i watch netflix, i meet up with my family/friends, i read and write and all these things make me incredibly happy.

chat #4: kendall @pleasesmi1e

hi everyone, and welcome to chat #4! for this chat, i reached out to my friend kendall, who runs @pleasesmi1e on instagram. i’ve been following her since i first started my account about 6 years ago, and we’ve become good friends through the entire journey! she’s the sweetest, and this chat is a little insight into her page and views.

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

hi, i’m kendall! i’m 20 and i’m from california. i go to university on the east coast, where i’m double majoring in marketing and psychology. i’m super involved with various cultural, professional, and philanthropic organizations both on and off my campus. personally, i’m passionate about learning everything about everything, and growing myself to be the best i can be! beyond myself, i’m passionate about mental health equity, educational equity, gender equality, and diversity and inclusion on all levels.

what does social media mean to you?

by definition, social media is a tool to post content with the public. on a deeper level, i see social media as a way to create and share information and ideas, to stay connected with loved ones, to build communities, to spread important messages. it’s something i use every day: as a lesson, as a tool, as a bridge.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

i see social media as more positive!

why do you think this is?

social media provides each person with a voice, to share the messages they want to share and advocate for what they believe in. on top of that, it connects people from all over the world. i've built some incredible relationships with people worldwide and it was all through the help of social media. i've moved around a lot growing up, and being able to keep in touch with loved ones and see what they are up to after all these years is very meaningful to me. the reason that resonates most with me is that it can motivate and inspire people. as life has its ups and downs, seeing one video or quote can make all the difference in your day.

what’s the goal of your social media?

my goal with my page (@pleasesmi1e) is that i can, like the page name says, make you smile! whether it be with an inspirational quote, a cute animal picture, a motivational sign, etc.. further, going beyond the quotes that tell you to be happy, giving followers ways on how to work towards that! providing you tips on ways to take care of yourself, or some insight on the benefits of doing something. overall, my goal with social media is to spread positivity, and help people make real differences in their lives by sharing what i’ve learned!

what do you do that brings you joy?

on my own, learning new things brings me joy! whether it be something related to my studies that can help me in a future career, how to make a certain food, fun facts...new knowledge makes me so happy! besides that, i like to dance! nailing a choreography and just grooving with no end goal except just to have fun is also very freeing.

my love languages are quality time and acts of service! being able to express these to my loved ones is something i try to do on a daily basis. making food together, watching shows together (especially thrillers and suspense!), even just sitting and existing together - these simple things actually mean the world to me.

chat #3: rachel @survivor_mentality

for chat #3, i invited my friend rachel to share a bit about her views on social media. we always tend to talk about the power of social media on mental health, so i thought it would be cool to immortalize her views in words and share them with my audience.

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

i am 23 years old, originally from new york city, and have been living in los angeles for the past eight years.

what does social media mean to you?

social media is a tool that can be used for various objectives and concepts. in general, i view it as a place of connection between friends, family, and strangers via the internet. it can alternatively be used for businesses, self expression, and news sources.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

i see it as a negative, because it takes away from time spent outdoors, or enjoying the moment instead of trying to snap the perfect photo. it can also be used as a measure of comparison in terms of clothes, lifestyle, body standards, etc. and can have a mentally toxic effect.

why do you think this is?

i think this is because it showcases a false sense of reality and doesn’t show the inner, daily struggles of life. we only show what we want people to see, because we get to pick and choose the “best” parts of our lives to share. social media was designed for this very purpose--but in doing so, it actually isolates us from one another.

what’s the goal of your social media?

my goal of my social media is to bring people together that have struggled with anything that makes them identify as a survivor--whether that be PTSD, eating disorders, autoimmune, self-help, etc. the goal is to make people feel less alone and understand that there are others like them and that support can be received from anywhere.

what’s your outlet?

my outlet is baking and experimenting with new recipes. i put my favorite podcast on and let myself relax and only think about what's in front of me.

chat #2: aaron @lovelyquoting

welcome to chat #2! for this one, my friend aaron who runs @lovelyquoting was kind enough to send over some answers. i love what he’s sharing about his journey, and i’d strongly recommend you give it a read!

tell me a little bit about yourself.

hi! my name is aaron. i’m 19 years old and i just finished my freshman year of college, woo! i’m double majoring in public relations & advertising and spanish with hopes to become a public relations manager for musicians!

what does social media mean to you?

to me, social media is what unites so many people in the world. you can meet other like-minded individuals, you can easily contact and update distant friends and relatives, and you can also express yourself creatively! i think it’s amazing how social media has given us a new type of communication. people can reference things they’ve seen online and it almost becomes a sort of widespread inside joke between thousands of people!

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

this is a difficult question to answer. i think social media becomes whatever you want it to become. when i first signed up on social media, i was constantly exposed to negative outlets--unrealistic beauty standards, demeaning comments, and one-sided narratives. however, with time, i was able to find accounts and profiles that made me feel happy and that reminded me of the power social media has to spread goodness. now, i try to focus on these uplifting aspects of social media rather than let myself and my mentality be damaged by the bad.

what’s the goal of your social media?

the quotes that i post on my social media account act as a sort of diary of everything that i’m feeling. there are moments when i’m super happy and i feel like spreading such joy through as many posts as i can, but there are also times when i’m not feeling the best and i use my posts as a way to find solace and comfort that i’m not alone. and i hope that’s what my posts do for other people. i hope they allow people to see how important they are, and i hope they allow other people to feel understood and heard.

tell me about your happiness journey.

my happiness journey has been kind of rocky, i’m not going to lie. for as long as i can remember, i’ve been happy. and by happy, i mean i was excited to spend time with my friends and go on adventures; thinking about the future made me hopeful. however, this past year i developed anxiety and i’m not proud to say that it took over my life and made me long for the past me. anxiety made me feel scared to leave my house, it made me scared to spend time with my friends and to enjoy the little moments in life which i had previously cherished so much. thinking about the future frightened me; i didn’t know if i would ever be able to be happy again. and the worst part about it all is that i knew i had nothing to be anxious about. i knew i was fine and that nothing had changed and that i was capable of doing all of the things i used to. but there would constantly be this knot in my stomach that would cause my heart to race and my body to sweat. recently, i realized just how badly my mental state had gotten. i realized how instead of trying to fight and overcome my anxiety, i would feed into it and let it take over who i was. i started saying affirmations about myself as often as i could. instead of saying that i wasn’t good enough or that i would never overcome my anxiety, i started telling myself that i am good enough and that i will overcome my anxiety. although simple, this change has honestly improved my life. i believe that if you hear something long enough, you’ll start to believe it. so if you’re constantly telling yourself that you’re unworthy and incapable, you’ll truly believe you are. this is why uplifting blogs are so important. they remind you of your worth and they help you avoid falling into the toxic rabbit hole i was trapped in for so long. there are still moments where i feel anxious, but they aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be. i hope everyone is able to make such a change in their life and start to realize just how worthy and incredible they truly are.

how has your career impacted your mental state?

being in college has taken a toll on my mental state. i can’t deny all of the pleasant memories it has given me, but i also can’t claim that it hasn’t been hard. my schoolwork has made me feel overwhelmed. it has made me prioritize studying, doing homework, and getting quantifiable success, but at what cost? i can’t even begin to imagine the number of times i’ve passed on hanging out with my friends or spending time on myself just so i could focus on my school work. education is something that’s so important to me and i truly feel blessed and privileged to receive the education that i do. however, i think there’s a fine line between socializing, self-care and work that i need to find. it feels as though i either study too much and miss out on important memories or i either work too little and miss out on the education i should be grateful for. i hope that one day i am truly able to find a balance between the two and not let college have such a mental hold over me.

what do you do that brings you joy?

being in quarantine has allowed me to realize how many things truly bring me joy. for instance, i realized how much i love driving--especially on long, open roads. to me, driving is so therapeutic. you can listen to music, you can think and process your emotions, or you can even just sit in silence and drive. something else that brings me joy is being clean. i know it sounds ridiculous, but i swear it puts me in a better mood! there’s nothing better than taking a shower at night and washing the day off; spending a little extra time taking care of your skin and body and then slipping into freshly washed sheets. and, to top it all off, having a little snack (maybe some hot cocoa, maybe some ice cream) and just watching a movie in your bed until you feel tired and go to sleep. i just live for those little moments! finally, listening to music truly brings me joy. i never realized how influential music can be in shaping how you feel until recently. it’s such a great way to start off your morning with empowering and uplifting songs that make you feel as though you can take on the entire world! i recommend everyone to make a morning playlist to kickstart their day, whether it be an upbeat and fun playlist or a calming and relaxing one.

chat #1: me

for this first chat, i sat down myself and took some time to answer the questions i sent out to everyone else, forcing myself to confront my feelings (positive and negative) about social media.

tell me a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, age, etc).

my name is jessie, but you’re welcome to call me jess. i’m 20 years old, and studying literature, digital humanities, and writing in college as a third year undergraduate student. i’ve been running @thishappypage for about 6 years, while pursuing a career in digital media and being a part time student.

what does social media mean to you?

social media is community. it’s where i go when i need to express myself, or share something that’s happening in my life. it’s different depending on which account i go to, @thishappypage is for empowerment while my personal account is for storytelling. overall, my social media platforms are a means of connection and communal empowerment.

do you see social media as more positive or negative?

if i had to pick one, i’d say positive. my page actively tries to spread positivity, fighting the negative stigmas associated with social media such as bullying. social media is a tool, and it’s really up to the users to use it as they will. i’d argue that it’s not the platform itself that’s positive or negative, as it’s just a tool that can be enabled to create good or cause harm based on the user’s intentions. in the end, we’re all hiding behind our screens, but it’s just a question of what we’re doing with our power as creators and consumers of digital content, and how our online actions influence others.

why do you think this is?

i prefer to see social media as positive because that’s what i hope it can become, for better or for worse. everything i do using my platforms (and aspire to do in later careers) focuses on communal empowerment- connecting creators with their audiences in a meaningful way. there’s a lot of intention behind it, because social media magnifies the power of our words and their ability to hurt others, which is why people may view it as negative. it’s definitely impacted the way we live our lives, but it’s not negative until you decide it is. if you’re using your platforms to bully others and spread words of hate, you are the negative force informing your social media. you’d find a platform to share your negativity regardless, and it’s not the fault of social media that you’re using that particular platform. if people want to be heard, they make sure they’re heard, regardless of what tools they use to amplify their voices.

tell me about your happiness journey.

it started in middle school, when i was struggling with feeling unhappy for what felt like the first time in my life. school was hard (especially math), friends were difficult to make and keep, and i had yet to develop an identity that i felt comfortable with. it was all a lot for me to handle, and my mental health took the brunt of the fall. i remember sitting in my hallway after a bit of crying, summoning my courage and trying to think of something that i could do to channel everything i was feeling into a productive venue. that’s when @thishappypage was born, an account that i used to share all of the quotes that i wanted to read, but couldn’t find anywhere else. it’s completely blown up and far surpassed any expectation i had for it, and i’m honored to still be running it. part of me never thought i’d actually make it to college, to the point where my page would actually be helping people other than myself. funny how that worked out!

how has your career impacted your mental state?

i work in social and digital media, so i’m always staring at a screen. it’s hard to maintain a balance, because i know i’m not as healthy or happy as i could be because all i do is stare at screens- for class and for work. don’t get me wrong, i love interacting with different demographics and creating content for them, but it can be draining and hard to prioritize my mental health. i’m honestly still working on finding a balance between “me time” and working, but it’s a journey i’m happy to be on.

what's a chat?

a chat is a conversation i’ll be having with people that occupy the social media space, whether they’re fellow influencers, musicians, or authors. the point of these chats is to start a conversation about social media and whether it’s inherently positive or negative, focusing on the impact it has on mental health.

all participants received the same questions, and it was up to them which they answered depending on their comfort levels. in addition, all of them were personally reached out to by me, and i put a lot of thought into who i contacted to take part in this project.

eventually, i’d love to have face to face conversations about mental health and social media, but with the world’s current conditions, it was safer and more effective to do everything virtually. if you have any questions about the process or you want to be involved, don’t hesitate to reach out to me!

signing off,

jess
